For a complete review of school bus safety for riders and drivers, please visit the National Highways Traffic Safety Administrations website at: https://www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/school-bus-safety
Bus Stop Safety:
- Arrive at least 5 minutes before the bus does.
- Wait for the bus to make a complete stop, the door opens, and the bus driver gives you the ok to get on or off.
- Never walk behind the school bus. MAKE EYE CONTACT with the school bus driver to make sure that they can see you. Always walk in front of a stopped school bus (and only after the driver has already indicated they see you) in a designated crosswalk, or stay on a sidewalk.
- Never stop in front of a school bus. If you drop something, leave it there. The bus driver can't always see you if you stop and/or bend down in front of it.
Drivers:
- Stop means stop. If the stop sign is out, then you should remain stopped too.
- It is illegal for a vehicle to pass a stopped school bus.
- Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop, and so should you!
- Red flashing lights with an extended stop arm indicates the bus is stopped AND CHILDREN ARE GETTING ON OR OFF. Remain stopped until the stop arm is withdrawn and the bus has began moving again before you do too!
